Scalise was one of five people hospitalized after 66-year-old gunman James Hodgkinson opened fire at a baseball practice for Republican members of Congress a day ahead of their annual charity fundraiser game against Democrats.
The hospital says Scalise tolerated the surgery well.
Rep. Steve Scalise has undergone another surgery after being readmitted to an intensive care unit Wednesday because of concerns for infection. "He remains in serious condition", MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in an update posted to its website.
But now, Scalise's condition has been downgraded to serious.

The round fragmented, causing significant damage to Scalise's bones, internal organs and blood vessels, the hospital reported shortly after the shooting.
Scalise, 51, has been hospitalized since June 14 when he was shot in the hip by a gunman who opened fire on a baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia. He has undergone several surgeries and had been upgraded to fair condition.
Other victims included two congressmen, a congressional aide, a lobbyist and two police officers.
"We started giving him some liquids, I put pressure on his wound in his hip and Brad Wenstrup, a congressman from Cincinnati, Ohio, fortunately he's a physician, he started doing what you need to do to minimize the blood loss", Brooks said.
