Authorities say officers fatally wounded a man who fired shots toward the shore from a sailboat in the waters off Washington state.
Bainbridge Island Police spokeswoman Kellie Stickney said the man opened fire at officers responding to calls on Saturday night (Sunday NZ Time) in Eagle Harbour.
The city of Bainbridge Island announced just after 1 a.m. PT on Sunday, July 9 that the active shooter situation is over. Anyone living in the area was asked to shelter in place and stay away from windows.
A King County sheriff's helicopter hovered overhead and dropped flash bangs to try to get the man to surrender.

Bainbridge Island Chief of Police Matthew Hamner told Q13 News it was not known whether anyone was hit but officers were believed to be taking fire.
Bainbridge Island Police Chief Matthew Hammer (above) said the gunman had been firing at the Bainbridge Island shoreline from a boat before officers arrived. No other injuries were reported. The photographer said the gunman climbed back into the cabin of the main boat, emerged with a rifle and aimed it at the officers.
Bainbridge Island is located in Puget Sound; it is a 35-minute ferry ride from Seattle.
