Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said President Donald Trump opened the meeting with Vladimir Putin raising the issue of Russian election meddling.
The Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, had told reporters after Friday's meeting that Trump had accepted Putin's assurances that Moscow didn't interfere with the election - an account that appeared at odds with that of the U.S. secretary of state, Rex Tillerson.
Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, who was in the meeting, said afterward that Trump accepted Putin's assurances that Russia didn't interfere in the election.
Trump and Putin agreed to explore a framework around which they can work to better understand these types of cyberthreats, the USA diplomat said.
Mr Putin said his answers were detailed and covered his discussions on the election meddling issue with representatives of the previous administration, including former president Barack Obama.
He said the two men connected quickly and had "a very clear positive chemistry". "Several times I had to remind the President, and people were sticking their heads in the door".
There are important questions, however, about the rest of the exchange, and about whether even now Mr. Trump understands the gravity of Russia's interference in America's democratic processes.

"And I think that's why it's good that the investigations are going on".
Mr Tillerson said the meeting was "very constructive", adding that "there was so much to talk about" that neither leader "wanted to stop".
"We're getting played by our president and certainly we're getting played by Putin", Waters said during the interview. He also told reporters that during the meeting, the two countries had a reached a "de-escalation agreement" related to an area in southwest Syria. "I answered those questions as best I could".
"I do not know how this will sound, but I will say as I see it: Trump on TV is very different from the real person", the Russian leader said. According to Tillerson, he does not believe both nations will agree on a conclusion concerning last United States elections, but said the leaders focused on how to move forward in the future. "We spoke over the phone", he said, "but phone conversations are never enough, definitely".
Putin said he hopes the joint project will quell the allegations of Russian hacking. Our position is well-known, and I repeated it - there is no basis to think that Russian Federation interfered in the election process.
