White House refers House panel to Trump's tweets about Comey 'tapes'

No tapes were ever uncovered, but Comey later revealed during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing that he orchestrated the release of a memo that detailed conversations between him and the president.

"But when (Comey) found out that there maybe are tapes out there, whether it's governmental tapes or anything else or who knows, I think his story may have changed and you'll have to look into that because then he'll have to tell what actually took place at the events". "I think the President made it very clear that he wanted the truth to come out".

In May, while he was still leading the FBI, Comey testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee that he had "never" been an anonymous source in media reports about ongoing investigations involving Trump or former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Trump did not provide a direct answer when asked if Mueller should recuse himself from the investigation because of his friendship with Comey, instead calling the special prosecutor's connection to the former FBI director "bothersome". "And by talking about something like tapes, it made people and it made Comey, in particular, think to himself that I better be honest, I better tell the truth about circumstances regarding the situation".

Trump's appearance on Fox News came a day after he admitted on Twitter that he had not taped his conversations with Comey as he previously claimed.

"Look, there has been no obstruction", Trump told Fox.

Trump's admission came one day before a deadline on which he had been ordered to produce whatever such recordings he might have. Spicer noted that Comey "had been honest and told the president on three separate occasions that he wasn't under investigation".

But that shift in rhetoric creates new problems for the Trump administration. "Right, David? It better be, David", he said to applause.

Trump appeared to leave open the possibility that recordings of their conversations exist, saying only that he did not create and is not in possession of any such tapes.

Trump responded that he would discuss the existence of tapes "over a ver short period of time". After all, it seems increasingly unlikely that evidence will emerge Trump engaged in any illegal collusion with Russian officials. Just 21 percent said "they believe neither of them", while 8 percent said "they believe both of them", according to NBC News. The subcommittee is examining what USA intelligence agencies say was a Russian campaign of influence was meant to boost Donald Trump's chances of winning the 2016 presidential election.

"Well he's very, very good friends with Comey, which is very bothersome", he said.

Mueller's probe is said to have recently been expanded to include an examination of whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice by sacking Comey.
