The eighth Saw movie is directed by Michael and Peter Spierig (Daybreakers) from a script by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg (Piranha 3D, Sorority Row) alongside original creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell. And there's a fancy new title treatment to go with it (see below).

Jigsaw, the main Saw villain, has been dead for more than half the series. Previously, the film was titled Saw: Legacy, but now it's been revealed it has a new name, one that's perhaps more telling of what the movie might be about: Jigsaw (via Entertainment Weekly).

The name Jigsaw, of course, belongs to the franchises big bad John Kramer (Tobin Bell), who after being diagnosed with an inoperable frontal lobe tumor, decides to create a series of intricate (and deadly) games, to test those he believes are wasting their lives.

Due to arrive in cinemas on October 27th Stateside (and United Kingdom cinemas a week earlier on October 20th), just in time for Halloween, the film revolves around various dead bodies that begin to turn up all over the city, each meeting their demise in a variety of grisly ways. Tobin Bell's demented serial killer actually bit the bullet during Saw III in 2006, and has since appeared in subsequent sequels via flashback.

I know people love to rag on the SAW films and the whole torture era of horror movies, but I really liked the puzzle/mystery construct of this franchise, and this might be one of the first films that adopted the serialized structure from modern television.

Jigsaw will open in United Kingdom cinemas on 20 October.

The film will star Mandela Van Peebles, Laura Vandervoort, Brittany Allen, and Callum Keith Rennie.
