Five Camden tower blocks being evacuated over fire safety fears

Residents are to be evacuated from a council tower block in London over fire safety fears in the wake of the Grenfell Tower blaze.

The council's leader, Gould, said it would take up to four weeks to fix the blocks that were evacuated and said that some 4,000 residents were affected.

The testing is being done as officials around Britain scramble to assess the safety of apartment buildings following the June 14 inferno that engulfed Grenfell Tower in west London, killing an estimated 79 people. But it was not fitted to the standard it had commissioned.

And it's been confirmed that no cladding or insulation present in the Grenfell Tower building has been added to any high rise blocks in the borough.

"I know it's hard, but Grenfell changes everything and I just don't believe we can take any risk with our residents' safety and I have to put them first".

Amid chaotic scenes, residents clutching children, pets and small amounts of clothing and food emerged from five tower blocks to sleep on air beds in a local sports centre after hearing on the news that their buildings were being evacuated.

Up to 4,000 people - including families with newborn babies and a Second World War veteran - were told to leave their homes after fire officers said they could not guarantee the safety of the buildings.

"I've made the really, really hard decision to move the people living there into temporary accommodation while we do the urgent works to guarantee safety", Gould told reporters outside the public housing complex.

Lauren Mitchell, a resident, said people were told if they chose not to leave their homes the police would be informed.

He said: "It was a rush, I didn't know anything. I don't know what's going to happen, that's the trouble". Similar inspections are ongoing elsewhere in Britain on hundreds of buildings.

The council had already announced that it would immediately begin preparing to remove cladding from the five towers on the estate discovered in checks following the fire in north Kensington.

She added: "We have been offered a hotel in Wembley now".

The Camden buildings have the same combustible exterior insulation that was on the Grenfell Tower, scene of last week's deadly blaze. "We did our best I promise".

Chalcots resident Shirley Philips who raised her concerns to Ms Gould said she was given no notice before being told she must leave her home. Four tower blocks were evacuated following worries about the blocks' external cladding and gas pipe insulation.

Fears about cladding are not limited to apartment buildings.

Buildings in London, Manchester and Plymouth are among those where problem cladding has been identified. At least one hotel chain is calling in experts to make certain its properties meet safety regulations.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said he was in contact with the council and the emergency services about the situation.

NHS Trusts have also been told to urgently check their buildings to establish whether any are clad in materials implicated in the Grenfell Tower fire.

British police investigating the fire at Grenfell Tower in west London in which 79 people are believed to have died say the blaze started in a fridge freezer.

McCormack said all "complete bodies" had been removed from the burnt-out tower and there was "a awful reality that we may not find or identify everyone who died due to the intense heat".
