Federal Bureau of Investigation authorities said today the man who shot several lawmakers last week acted alone, and the attack was not attached to any terror threat. Slater said Hodgkinson was running out of money, having marital trouble and grappling with the effects of medication.
Hodgkinson was shot multiple times in the torso, and later died at a hospital. The hospital listed Scalise in serious condition on Saturday, but showing signs of improvement. He underwent several surgeries and remains hospitalized at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
It was also learned that Hodgkinson volunteered for Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign.
Hodgkinson displayed a photo of the Vermont Independent on his Facebook page.
Slater said it did not appear that Hodgkinson had a target in mind when he opened fire at the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria last week.
Hodgkinson legally purchased the rifle in March 2003, and modified it to accept a detachable magazine and replaced the original stock with a folding stock, Slater said.
Hodgkinson had with him a piece of paper listing the names of six members of congress, said Tim Slater, special agent in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office's Criminal Division, at a news conference Wednesday in Washington. All five people who were shot, including two U.S. Capitol police officers, survived their injuries. Police searched his vehicle at the scene of the shooting, a storage facility that he rented April 16 of this year in Alexandria, and his home in Belleville.
