Russia-US meeting canceled over sanctions

"Our targeted sanctions were imposed in response to Russia's ongoing violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its neighbour, Ukraine", U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.

Ryabkov called the new USA sanctions as absurd and said that Moscow will not leave such steps without a response.

Poroshenko said the US had committed to maintaining sanctions on Russian Federation until the implementation of the Minsk 2 peace agreement meant to halt the violence in east Ukraine.

The meeting was scheduled to take place on June 23 to discuss issues concerning Russian-US.

"Such actions seriously endanger the whole complex of Russia-U.S. relations, which is already experiencing a hard period", the statement said.

A day earlier, the ministry abruptly announced the cancelation of talks between Lavrov's deputy, Sergei Ryabkov, and a top U.S. State Department diplomat, Tom Shannon.

Russia's frustration with the Trump administration boiled over Wednesday, with Moscow abruptly canceling talks created to improve ties with the USA and threatening retaliation for sanctions the White House renewed Tuesday. The Senate bill penalizes Russian Federation for its meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

The U.S. president is expected to stress the American commitment to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the protection of Poland and other Eastern European former Communist states from Russian Federation.

In response, the state department expressed regret and said the secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, was "open to future discussions". He said that all the serious observers are laughing at American explanation of those sanctions.
