FILE - In this November 20, 2016, file photo, UCLA's Lonzo Ball (2) walks by his father LaVar Ball, right, to greet family members after UCLA defeated Long Beach State in an NCAA college basketball game in Los Angeles.
Ball was asked by SportsCenter co-host Michael Smith about the recent rumors that four-time MVP James may leave Cleveland for Los Angeles when he hits free agency in 2018.
"It's insane, I couldn't ask for anymore, to be able to learn from [Johnson] is truly a blessing", Ball said after his selection.
"I think what you're drafting is the son and not the father", Johnson told ESPN in May. "Obviously he's the best point guard to ever play, so I'm looking to go in there and just learn from day one", Ball said. "It's gonna be there, you know".
Ball has made no secret of his desire to play for his hometown Lakers, who reportedly dealt starting point guard D'Angelo Russell and center Timofey Mozgov to the Nets in a cap-clearing move that left the point guard spot for Ball.

These include round-the-clock fire patrols on estate corridors and additional fire safety checks, it said. Buildings in London , Manchester and Plymouth are among those where problem cladding has been identified.
With Magic Johnson now running the show with the Los Angeles Lakers, Smith said the team will look for Lonzo Ball to be someone who can be a leader and run that offense.
First, LaVar had a Big Baller Brand hat ready and waiting for the moment, claiming that he had it made when Lonzo was "a baby". He's the type of distributor who makes everyone on his team better.
He is the highest pick from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Bruins since Russell Westbrook was picked fourth overall in 2008.
It's unclear whether this pick will eventually be used in a trade for Paul George.
Although the Lakers are certainly on the upswing, the playoffs might be a little further off than next season.
