The Kansas City Royals are hosting the Boston Red Sox tonight in Major League Baseball action.
Both started with high expectations, endured a miserable first month that left many fans writing them off, then found a spark somewhere along the way.
Boston's win combined with the Yankees loss to the Angels gives puts the Red Sox in first place in the division for the first time this season. The Boston Red Sox offense had 13 hits in the game with Chris Young, Xander Bogearts, Sandy Leon, and Deven Marrero all recording multi-hit games.
Boston right-hander Hector Velazquez was almost as good as Hammel in his second career start, carefully navigating a bunch of baserunners during the first two innings. "To keep them to six singles and a homer, I feel pretty good about it". Except when Scott came on to face Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez, there was no Kimbrel warming up behind him. Kelvin Herrera got his 17th save of the season by pitching around a lead-off double by Jackie Bradley Jr. Pomeranz has limited experience in his career versus the current crop of Kansas City batters, who are a collective 1-for-7 against him with five strikeouts.
The game remained deadlocked until the seventh, when Whit Merrifield singled to score Ramon Torres, who was on third as a pinch runner after a Drew Butera triple.
"I was happy with where the pitch was, but it was too good", Scott said.
Police consider manslaughter charges in Grenfell Tower aftermath
She appealed for people to come forward with information about anyone who may have been in the building on the night of the fire. She said: "We are looking at every criminal offence from manslaughter onwards".
It was the third straight start in which Hammel pitched into the seventh. "I just found a hole".
Matt Strahm, the Royals lefty making his second career start, didn't fare as well as his first start.
Benintendi's drive was estimated at 454 feet and landed in the right-center waterfall. The pain began for the Red Sox third baseman a few days ago, but Farrell said Sandoval's temperature kept climbing. "You get a little bit of an idea and a game plan knocked out before the game and he did exactly what we would have hoped, which was to keep the game close, keep it under control and get us into the sixth inning".
We're getting plus money with the hotter team at home against a Red Sox club that played late Sunday night and is throwing a pitcher out there with limited playing time. LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (right knee) went through fielding practice before the game. One walk and a grand slam later, Kimbrel still wasn't warming up, and the Red Sox had found themselves with a two-run deficit thanks to Perez's grand slam.
But after Sale got through the first batter of the ninth inning, his bid for a complete game quickly unraveled.
