Iran says ISIS strike serves as warning to US, Saudi Arabia

There are concerns that further confrontations could lead to a breakout of hostilities that would hinder the battle against IS.

Iran described today the missile attack against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group in the Syrian province of Deir Ez-Zour as crushing and successful, destroying command centers and weapons depots.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered weekend missile strikes on ISIS targets in Syria, Revolutionary Guards said, contradicting a previous report that they were authorised by the country's security council.

Guard spokesman Gen. Ramazan Sharif told The Associated Press on Tuesday the force's "local sources and drone films say that all the six missiles the Guard launched hit their targets".

State television footage showed the missiles on truck missile launchers in the daylight before being launched at night.

He billed Iran's retaliatory missile strike as a countermeasure of just a "very limited scale".

Activists in Syria said they had no immediate information on damage or casualties from the strikes.

Later on Tuesday, the coalition issued another statement confirming the killing of the self-proclaimed Grand Mufti of ISIS, Turki al-Binali who is originally from Bahrain. Central Command, which oversees USA military operations in the Middle East.

The downing of the drone came on the same day Australia announced it would temporarily suspend airstrikes by its forces in Syria, after Syrian ally Russian Federation threatened to target planes from the U.S. -led coalition operating in the skies over Syria in response to the downing of a Syrian fighter jet by the U.S. Air Force on Sunday.

The truce that went into effect Saturday came after some of the worst fighting in months between rebels and pro-government forces.

Russian Federation has threatened aircraft from the US -led coalition in Syrian-controlled airspace and suspended a hotline meant to avoid collisions in retaliation for the USA military shooting down a Syrian warplane.

"The three captured members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard are now being questioned by Saudi authorities", it said, citing a Saudi official. "The regime made the truce and then violated it".

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says it was extended 24 hours. It said government helicopters dropped 55 barrel bombs on Daraa while warplanes carried out about 20 airstrikes. The conflict quickly descended into a civil war, which has since left at least 400,000 people dead.

They said hundreds of troops with dozens of armored vehicles including tanks had surged into the Bir Qassab area some 75 km (45 miles) southeast of Damascus towards the Badia region that skirts the borders with Jordan and Iraq.
