The centrist's loss could add weight to Sanders' argument that the Democratic Party needs to turn left.
The Democrats expended vast amounts of money on Jon Ossoff, an attractive young candidate running in a district that has voted Republican in most recent elections, but is seen as a seat within reach for the Democrats.
The outcome "better be a wake-up call for Democrats - business as usual isn't working", Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., said on Twitter.

Republican Karen Handel declared victory in Georgia's 6th Congressional District with a promise that she'll work to gain the confidence of voters who backed her Democratic opponent. One of those, the notorious NY 23rd special election, was actually a net loss as an establishment Republican and conservative challenger split the ticket and allowed Democrat Bill Owens to squeak through.

She referenced that the GOP spent millions of dollars promoting House Speaker Paul Ryan since he was on the 2012 ticket as the vice presidential ticket and "I have a hundred million or so spent against me and his numbers are no better than mine".
