Some have blamed the minority leader for a string of near-misses in House special elections, most recently Republican Karen Handel's win over Democrat Jon Ossoff in Georgia.

Democrats have had four opportunities to pick up seats in the U.S. House of Representatives since Donald Trump became president, and haven't been able to capitalize on any of them.

While some House Democrats are blaming House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for their party's loss in a special congressional election this week in Georgia and are suggesting their caucus may need new leadership, Pelosi says her time isn't up.

Pelosi has led her party in the House since 2003, "overseeing losses in 2004, big gains in 2006 and 2008, then watching as her party slipped into its smallest minority in almost a century", the Washington Times reported.

Ellison said the Georgia 6th was not as competitive as 64 other House seats that Democrats could win in 2018 to wrest control away from Republicans, adding, "They're the ones who better be anxious". Handel and Republican outside groups tied Ossoff to Pelosi in campaign events and television ads, casting him as a puppet for what they described as her liberal agenda and "San Francisco values". The two have repeatedly sparred, with Schumer most recently releasing a video parodying the president's praise-filled cabinet meeting.

Representative Tim Ryan, a Democratic congressman from OH who has been an outspoken critic of his party's messaging and platform, perfectly summed up Americans' feelings towards Democrats.

The president wrote Thursday: "I certainly hope the Democrats do not force Nancy P out".

Dozens killed in Portugal forest fire
A vast wildfire has engulfed a central Portuguese town, killing 57 people and injuring dozens more in the European country. The Portuguese Football Federation changed its Twitter avatar to black to mourn the victims of the fire.

The Georgia victory was an important win for the Republican party, following Mr Ossoff's better-than-expected performance in the first-round election last month, but has left Democrats frustrated after a record-breaking funding drive failed to generate a win. "That would be very bad for the Republican Party - and please let Cryin' Chuck stay!"

Ossoff's defeat marked the Democrats' fourth failed attempt to pick up a congressional seat vacated by Trump cabinet/cabinet level appointees. Tim Ryan said, "You know what?"

'We'd love to have the question be in 2018, Nancy Pelosi versus Paul Ryan, ' Gingrich added.

A defiant Pelosi said she's "worth the trouble".

Ryan isn't saying whether or not he will challenge Pelosi as House Minority Leader again.

Asked specifically about the tweet at Thursday's press conference, Pelosi laughed and alluded to Democrats' popular vote advantage in the 2016 elections.
