Darjeeling unrest: GJM protests carrying dead bodies of party supporters

GJM chief Bimal Gurung has termed as "white lies" Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's claim that the agitation in Darjeeling hills was supported by insurgent groups, and asserted the struggle for a separate Gorkhaland state would be intensified.

He said violence can not help in reaching any solution.

Singh further said: "All concerned parties and stakeholders should resolve their differences and misunderstandings through dialogue in amicable environment".

The state government, meanwhile, held a meeting today with chairmen and vice-chairmen of 15 development boards working in the hills, which have already constituted a committee to appeal to the people to maintain peace.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday appealed to the citizens of Darjeeling to remain calm while urging them to shun violence.

Kolkata: Darjeeling MP and Minister of State SS Ahluwalia on Thursday demanded that the West Bengal government should immediately issue a notification mentioning that Bangla is not compulsory in schools across the hill districts.

Additional director general of police (law and order), Anuj Sharma denied police had shot at protesters, claiming that it was GJM supporters who had opened fire. GJM assistant secretary in a statement from an undisclosed locationsaid three GJM supporters - Sunil Rai, Mahesh Gurung and Bimal Sashankar ( Gajmer) were killed in the police firing at Singmari, where the GJM headquarters is located in Darjeeling.

Hundreds of protesters on Sunday paraded with coffins containing the bodies of two men they claimed were killed in clashes with Indian security forces in Darjeeling, as the hill resort reels from separatist unrest. These were the first deaths since violence started afresh after years in Darjeeling.

Sinn Fein and the DUP had already fallen out and power-sharing had been suspended. "What would happen then?" she asked. "When there is an attack on London , we in Ireland feel it is nearly an attack on us as well", Varadkar said.

"17th June, 2017 was a black day for the people of the hills as we have lost three of our brothers in Darjeeling, who were demanding for Gorkhaland". He said, "The strength that the Bengal government is showing is sad". However, GJM supporters took out a procession on Saturday; when police stopped them, they hurled stones and bottles.

The rally is now ongoing despite the police not giving the GJM supporters the authority to stage one. They are receiving treatment at various hospitals in Darjeeling and Siliguri.

The protestors are also asking for a separate Gorkhaland, a long pending demand of the people of the hills.

BJP state women's wing president Roopa Ganguly also raised her pitch against the Trinamool government saying the unrest in the hills was due to Banerjee.

Asked if the TRS is in favour of small states, Kavitha said this has been the party's stand since the beginning of the Telangana movement.

There was a deep-rooted conspiracy in the Hills she said vowing, "I will never let Darjeeling get split from Bengal till I am alive".

Addressing a press conference, Bengal CM said that the state government was ready to cooperate with the agitators, but GJM is not even listening to the court order.
