Just in case you were thinking that you needed a bigger choice of emoji to choose from, Unicode 10 has been released with 56 new emoji including dinosaurs and the "Colbert" amongst others and will roll out to supported platforms later this year.
The new Unicode 10 update also includes support for lesser-used languages plus new 8,518 characters, bringing the total number of emoji characters to 136,690.

As already mentioned, 56 new emoji (183 with the gender and skin color variations) have also been added.
A decades-old computer character standard has been updated with a symbol for bitcoin. That's usually a few months after the final standard has been approved. Going by timelines in the past, you can probably expect a rollout of the new emoji this fall.
