Helene is among a glut of tropical storms brewing in the region, with mass evacuations under way in southern U.S. states as Florence barrels across Virginia and the Carolinas. Isaac should move farther away from Lesser Antilles today, and then move across the eastern and central Caribbean Sea through the weekend. Tropical storm conditions are possible within the tropical storm watch area, also beginning late this morning. A west-northwestward motion with an increase in forward speed is expected during the next couple of days.
Helene had maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour and was moving north-northeast at 22 miles per hour.
The government of Portugal issued a tropical storm watch for the Azores Islands.
The storm, presently called Invest 95L, is predicted to bring one to three inches of rain to the Houston area, according to meteorology blog Space City Weather.
Hurricane and tropical storm watches have been posted for several Caribbean islands as a weakening Tropical Storm Isaac continues its trek toward the Leeward and Windward Islands.
"As it tracks towards the United Kingdom it will degrade - it will become an ex-tropical storm". The warnings from officials will be important to follow when Isaac reaches the islands.
Often the greatest threat from a hurricane is the storm surge.
Duke Energy North Carolina President David Fountain said Florence is so massive and its potential for damage so extensive that people could be without power for a very long time. It is moving northwest at 15 miles per hour, according to the NHC's update at 11 a.m. Sept 12.
Hurricane Florence Makes Landfall in N. Carolina
A state of emergency has been declared in five coastal states - North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Maryland and Virginia. It was expected to begin pushing its way westward across SC later in the day, in a watery siege that could go on all weekend.
A hurricane watch is in effect from Edisto Beach, South Carolina, to the South Santee River. But in the 9 a.m. advisory, the center said this would "be the last forecast/advisory issued by the National Hurricane Center on this system".
Evacuations were ordered up and down the coastlines in North and SC and in some areas of Virginia as well.
KHOU reports the storm could bring 10 inches of rain to isolated spots in South Texas.
The storm is now around 530 miles southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina, and is moving west-northwest at 17 mph.
"Interests elsewhere in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic states should monitor the progress of Florence", said the NHC.
"A broad area of low pressure is located over the central Gulf of Mexico".
As of this evening, the intensity of what spins up looks most likely to settle at tropical depression status sometime in the next five days.
