The FBI and local police are investigating a stabbing attack on an airport police officer in Flint, Michigan, as a possible act of terrorism, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the case.
United States law enforcement officials are working with Canadian authorities to learn more about the ties the suspect has to Canada, according to a law enforcement source.
Mike Shaw has identified the officer as Lt. Jeff Neville with the Bishop International Airport police.
Ken Brown, who was dropping off his daughter at the airport, told The Flint Journal he saw the officer after he was stabbed.
"The cop was on his hands and knees bleeding from his neck", Brown said.
The airport, which was evacuated and shut down, said all passengers were safe amid the investigation, headed by the FBI.
CNN is told the suspect is in custody.
At a media scrum in Ottawa Wednesday afternoon, federal Public Security Minister Ralph Goodale condemned the "heinous and cowardly attack" and said the RCMP are co-operating with the FBI, which is leading the investigation.

The FBI has not determined whether the incident was an act of terrorism.
The airport warned of potential cancellations and delays after the incident. According to reports, K-9 units were seen outside the airport as officers inspected vehicles in the auto park.
Michigan Radio reports that there were extra police officers stationed around City Hall.
Carpenter described the man in custody as appearing "blank, just totally blank".
Flint is about 80 kilometres northwest of Detroit.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police did not immediately return Reuters requests for comment.
