Yulin is a city in China where Lychee and Dog Meat festival will be held in Guangxi province.
As large numbers of officers patrolled the main Dongkou, Nanqiao and Big markets, local residents explained: "By persuading vendors to sell the meat inside the market, police meant to prevent clashes between dog meat vendors and animal rights activists". Charities Humane Society International [HSI] and Duo Duo both reported that while the festival had not been cancelled - and there was no outright ban on selling dog meat - last minute protests by vendors meant a two carcass ban was in place, which HSI claims is being enforced by law enforcement.
Residents and vendors claim that the dogs are killed humanely and that eating them is not more cruel than eating other animals.
Around four million cats are also killed annually for their meat in the country. "It's people's own choice what they eat". But locals disagreed that sales were down.
"We suspected that the truck was destined for Yulin to supply the festival market, and that numerous dogs were stolen pets".
Outside the market, vendors sold stewed dog meat out of enormous steaming woks, shovelling big portions into plastic bags for passing customers.

The will may be there, but as long as dog meat eating is legal in China it is hard for any one locality to issue its own ban.

Dr Peter Li, HSI's China policy specialist, said: "It is encouraging to see the Yulin authorities enforcing the compromise ban that they themselves struck with Yulin officials". Their flesh is skinned and then cooked for consumption for festival goers.
In Chinese culture dog meat is said to be beneficial during the hot summer months.
