U.S. sanctions to stay until Russian Federation quits eastern Ukraine: White House

WASHINGTON-The Trump administration is considering banning travel by USA citizens to North Korea, officials said Tuesday, as outrage grew over the death of American student Otto Warmbier and President Donald Trump declared it a "total disgrace".

Poroshenko hailed the U.S. -Ukraine relationship and pledged his commitment to democracy as he sought U.S. support against Russian aggression.

US President Donald Trump met with Ukraine's president on Tuesday and expressed support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in eastern Ukraine but said nothing about Russia's role, while the US government added to sanctions over Moscow's actions.

The White House is considering banning USA citizens from traveling to North Korea in the wake of 22 year-old college student Otto Warmbier's death.

"If people are that stupid that they still want to go to that country, then at least they assume the responsibility for their welfare", McCain said.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that the penalties are created to "maintain pressure on Russian Federation to work toward a diplomatic solution".

The U.S. has been punishing Russian Federation with sanctions since its 2014 annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region. The move could be a relief to many who anxious President Donald Trump would renege on US commitments to Europe to repairs ties with Russian Federation.

Last week, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson raised eyebrows by suggesting that the United States should not be "handcuffed" by an global plan to end the crisis.

Most notably, the muted welcome is striking given the Ukrainian leader's reputation a vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose meddling in the 2016 election and subsequent investigations into the Trump campaign's ties to Russia have largely overshadowed the first few months of the Trump presidency.

The measures target 38 organisations and individuals, including Russian government officials and also officials in Crimea - a Ukrainian region annexed by Russian three years ago.
