Prime minister's adviser on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz said on Wednesday that former military head Raheel Sharif accepted to lead Islamic military alliance in a personal capacity.

During an in-camera briefing to members of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday, Aziz told the senators that the ruling government did not send Raheel Sharif to Saudi Arabia officially adding that Pakistan had set a neutral policy in the recent rift between Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

During the committee's session, PPP Senator Kareem Khawaja had voiced his dissatisfaction with Pakistan's role in the Gulf crisis and added that the former army chief should be asked to return to Pakistan voluntarily.

PTI Senator Shibli Faraz maintained that recalling Raheel Sharif back to Pakistan will create rift between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia relations.

Aziz told the committee that Gen. Sharif was not sent by the government to lead the alliance and, therefore, can not be asked to return. "Pakistan will not get itself involved in issues of other states", he said. He said resolution moved by the Parliament on Yemen-Saudi issue is the primary point of Pakistan's policy in Gulf crisis. However, Kuwait is attempting to play the role of a mediator and hopes to diplomatically resolve the crisis among the Gulf Cooperation Council members.
