Australia's military suspends air operations over Syria

On Monday, Russia said it was suspending a military hotline to the U.S. created to avoid collisions in the skies above Syria. We, as you know, have requested detailed explanations from the Department of Defense.

"The US is trying to draw boundaries in the Syrian conflict and red lines for the Syrian army not to cross them", he said.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford, speaking at a luncheon at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., today, responded to the Russian actions after the USA downing of a Syrian war plane Sunday.

Ford also said that, given the strong support being offered by Iran and Russian Federation to the Syrian government, the "game was finished" for U.S. plans to overthrow Assad or compete with what he said would be Iran's success in the country. The staunch U.S. ally in September said it would widen the scope of targets in the air war against IS by allowing its pilots to strike jihadist support and logistics resources in Iraq and Syria.

USA officials are trying to calm the escalating situation and said they wanted to relaunch the "deconflcition' hotline".

Syrian opposition activists say a 48-hour truce in the southern city of Daraa has been extended.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks Syria's war, said government forces expanded their presence in Raqqa province by capturing from IS the town of Rasafa.

Daraa is where Syria's crisis first broke out in March 2011 as an uprising against President Bashar Assad's government.

The development comes as tensions rise in Syria with Russian Federation and Iran sending USA warnings.

Australia on Tuesday suspended its airstrikes against Islamic State group targets in Syria as a precaution, after a US fighter jet shot down a Syrian warplane earlier this week and Russian Federation warned the USA -led coalition from flying over Syrian army positions west of the Euphrates River.

Iran said the missile strike by its powerful Revolutionary Guard hit Syria's eastern city of Deir el-Zour on Sunday night and was in retaliation for two attacks in Tehran earlier this month that killed 17 people and were claimed by the Islamic State group.

Australia has six fighter jets based in the United Arab Emirates that strike targets in Syria and Iraq.
