Atlanta Hawks to pivot direction after trading Dwight Howard

The Atlanta Hawks have reportedly traded center Dwight Howard to the Charlotte Hornets, according to Marc Spears of ESPN's Undefeated.

The Hawks will receive Miles Plumlee, Marco Belinelli, and the 41st pick in Thursday's NBA Draft. Their new pick at 41 was also a good incentive for the Hornets, as the Hawks are probably betting that they can get the player that they want a little lower and sweeten the deal for Charlotte.

He averaged 12.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 25.4 minutes per game previous year to help the Spurs win the NBA's Southwest Division title and reach the Western Conference finals.

You have to wonder why the Hawks gave up on Howard after a single season in Atlanta. He appeared in 45 contests during the 2016-17 season, playing 32 games with the Bucks before joining the Hornets via trade and appearing in 13 games with Charlotte.

Plumlee put up 2.5 points per game.

Even though Dwight Howard is past his prime, he is still a productive player.

Wide open shots would be much harder to come by with Howard's predictable and inefficient post isolation game.

Dwight Howard entered the offseason on shaky terms with his Atlanta Hawks team.

Dwight Howard should be able to help the Charlotte Hornets in their pick-and-roll offense.

I interviewed Howard at his high school that winter before the National Basketball Association returned to Charlotte. At age 31, Howard doesn't fit into that. The trade reunites the former All-NBA and All-Star center with Steve Clifford, who served as an assistant coach during Howard's tenure with the Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Lakers.

Above and beyond that, Atlanta's direction as a franchise appears to have shifted after the arrival of new GM Travis Schlenk, who recently expressed skepticism about the Hawks' chances of re-signing All-Star power forward Paul Millsap - a departure that would nearly certainly send Atlanta into a rebuilding process.
