A law enforcement official says the gunman who wounded a top Republican congressman and several other people during an early morning baseball practice legally purchased his rifle and handgun. The GOP leader was "as critical as you can be" when he arrived at the hospital, Sava said.
Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, updated his status on Friday afternoon, touting Scalise's improved outlook days after his arrival and 'imminent risk of death'. His risk of death is "substantially lower" than it was when he was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, and "I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility", Sava said.
On Capitol Hill on Thursday, members of Congress tried to remain optimistic about Scalise's condition.
Scalise, 51, suffered a rifle wound in his left hip that shattered bones, tore organs and caused severe bleeding.
The political parties play against each another.
Before the game got started, members of Congress held a non-partisan prayer to honor Scalise and the Capitol Police in the middle of the field.
The Louisiana Republican and House majority whip is "more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones", according to a statement posted on his Twitter account.
Pelosi also cited past remarks by Trump, saying: "You have a president who says: 'I could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and nobody would care'". Griner remains hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.

Trump says Scalise "continues his very courageous fight", but adds: "it's been much more hard than people even thought at the time".
Scalise remains in critical condition at a hospital near the Capitol and has undergone multiple surgeries.
Rep. Cedric Richmond, the Democrats' star player, said he planned to stop by the hospital to check on Scalise before heading to the stadium.
The president paid a visit to Scalise on Wednesday night, meeting with Scalise's family and sitting by the congressman's bedside.
A clearer picture of Hodgkinson has emerged since the shooting, a staunch GOP opponent and Bernie Sanders supporter who was very active on social media to display those sentiments.
