Police have not identified Hassanen, but her father confirmed she was the victim in Sunday's attack.
Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, has been charged with the crime and is now in police custody.
He added: "Nothing suggests that this girl or the group was targeted because of who they are or what they believe". According to WUSA-TV, police found a baseball bat near the scene.
Police say it appears that Martinez Torres was "so enraged over the traffic dispute that it escalated into deadly violence". It appears the man got out of his vehicle and assaulted one of them, a 17-year-old girl.
"On June 19, ICE lodged a detainer on Darwin Martinez Torres, a citizen and national of El Salvador, with the Adult Detention Center in Fairfax, Virginia", the statement read.
While detectives believe the remains are those of the missing 17-year-old, a medical examiner has yet to confirm that, according to Fairfax police. The girl and her friends were dressed in abayas, a robe-like dress worn by some Muslim women.
"The ADAMS Center has always welcomed me and so many in Northern Virginia like family", said Herring. Her mother told The Washington Post police believe she was attacked with a metal baseball bat. "Indeed. If you think for a minute that her appearance had nothing to do with this crime, you're lying to yourself".
Audio of deadly police shooting released by Seattle PD
Family members told The Seattle Times that two boys and a girl, ages 11, 4, and 1, were at home. Charleena Lyles was shot after police saw her holding a knife, the Seattle Times reported .
In a statement, the Council on American-Islamic Relations said that anti-Muslim hate crimes increased 44 percent from 2015 to 2016.
Chaudry, who lives in the Washington suburbs, says the crime has prompted her to forbid her 20-year-old daughter from going out in the middle of the night without a parent.
"This tragic case appears to be the result of a road rage incident involving the suspect, who was driving and who is now charged with murder, and a group of teenagers who was walking and riding bikes in and along a roadway", a Fairfax Police Department statement said. Police department spokesperson Don Gotthardt told The Independent there was no indication that the crime was connected to Ms Hassanen's religion, dress, or proximity to the mosque. "All but one of the teens ran to the mosque, where the group reported that the girl had been left behind", according to Deputy Aleksandra Kowalski, a spokeswoman for the Loudoun County Sheriff s Office. Torres has been charged with the killing. They had been attending an overnight event at the local mosque. But police have pushed back against suggestions this is a hate crime. She was a sophomore at South Lakes High School in Reston, Virginia, and would have been starting her junior year this fall, friends said.
Detectives have obtained a murder warrant charging Martinez Torres with the teen's death. He is being held without bond.
Hassanen and a group of more than a dozen youths had just finished eating at a McDonald's and were heading back to the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Center in Sterling for an all-night Ramadan event when they noticed a man in a auto following them, the teens told News4. Police arrested Torres after a search.
The teenager had been participating in at a sleepover at a religious institution that authorities did not identify.
