Seminoles' meltdown in field helps LSU post 5-4 win in CWS

"It was a little bit of a weird game", LSU coach Paul Mainieri said.

The Florida State baseball team has seen this movie before.

And so Florida State and LSU met for an opening night date in Omaha for one of the most highly anticipated games of the tournament, what with LSU throwing and pitching lights-out baseball and FSU answering with lights-out throwing and pitching of its own. Going into Saturday's first game against LSU, Martin - who has 1,943 wins and needs 33 more to become the winningest coach in college baseball history - is 20-30 in the CWS.

Despite leading for almost the entire game, the Florida State baseball team surrendered two runs in the eighth inning and fell to LSU, 5-4, in Saturday's opening round of the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. Oregon State has won 22 in a row. We have a lot of respect for (OSU) Coach (Pat) Casey and his staff, and I expect that this game will be a complete blast. Wells misplayed Duplantis' hit in right field to allow Freeman to advance to third, and Freeman scored when Wells made an errant throw to the infield while Duplantis raced to third. The throw to home plate was dropped by catcher Cal Raleigh and Freeman slid in safely.

The Seminoles were charged with three errors on the critical play.

"I was doing some different things with my windup", he said. The biggest one came in the eighth when right fielder Steven Wells made two errors on the same play, and catcher Cal Raleigh committed another, allowing LSU to tie it at 4-4.

Fourth-seeded LSU fell behind early to Florida State and took advantage of mistakes in the bottom of the eighth to rally for a 5-4 win Saturday evening in front of a sellout crowd of 25,305 fans at TD Ameritrade Park.

The Seminoles had solid success against LSU ace Alex Lange, knocking him out in the seventh inning after scoring four runs on seven hits and four walks. Lange walked Taylor Walls to start the game, and then Busby cleared the wall in dead center with his team-leading 15th homer of the season. That's simply astonishing considering the Seminoles had the lead off runner on base six of the seven innings Lange started. And gutsy, out of the box decision victor to Mainieri, whose team got a win even though its starter and ace Lange did not throw well as he walked four and allowed seven hits and four earned runs.

With two outs and Duplantis at first base, Holton struck out LSU cleanup hitter Greg Deichmann with a breaking ball in the dirt. They didn't point fingers or said they couldn't get a break. "It makes me as one of the coaches feel good because a team believed in themselves".
