The U.K. police service said officers were called at 12:20 a.m. local time (7:20 p.m. Sunday ET) to the scene on Seven Sisters Road in Finsbury Park neighborhood, home to many immigrants.
The Muslim Council tweeted that worshippers had been struck and said its prayers were with the victims.
One witness described being surrounded by bodies in the wake of the attack outside the Muslim Welfare House, yards from the mosque.
Prime Minister May said her thoughts were with those injured in "this awful incident".
One person has been arrested after a vehicle hit pedestrians in north London, injuring several people, police said Monday, as Muslim leaders said worshippers were mown down after leaving a mosque.
The police counter terrorism command has launched an investigation into the incident. "My thoughts are with those and the community affected by this very bad event", he said on Twitter.
Today's incident followed a series of attacks in Britain.
The Council further said the van incident is a violent manifestation of Islamophobia and have called on authorities to increase security outside mosques.
The site is close to the Finsbury Park Mosque, from which worshippers were leaving after midnight prayers when the incident took place, Sky News reported.
The force also dismissed reports that the van driver produced a knife, saying: "At this stage there are no reports of any persons having suffered any knife injuries". I initially thought it was my cousin.

Others have described seeing police tend to the injured. Some people wanted to beat him up. And then the guy came out of his van and I got him. "They ran away somewhere". He was not ill.
One man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident bore the hallmarks of a terrorist attack in the British capital earlier this month.
Another witness, Abdikadar Warfa, said: "I saw a man underneath the van. There was a lot of shouting in Arabic, so I can't tell you exactly what was being said".
"They (people who were hit) were mostly young".
Vanzella said she saw police put a man into a police vehicle and take him away, but she didn't see them arrest him.
The London Ambulance Service says the injured are being taken to hospitals. "I am grateful to our emergency services, who responded quickly and have been working on the scene throughout the night", he added.
"A number police units are at, and managing the cordons around, the crime scene, including local officers and those from neighboring boroughs - supported by armed officers and the Territorial Support Group", the police statement continued.
