European Champions Portugal and Gold Cup kings Mexico played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in their opening Confederations Cup Group A match in the Russian city of Kazan.

The much discussed video assistant referee was is being trialed at the Confederations Cup this summer, but there were only complaints to be heard after Portugal drew 2-2 with Mexico as the system disrupted play and disallowed a goal that really should have stood.

The Euro 2016 winners took the lead on 34 minutes when Ronaldo sprinted into the box and his beautifully-timed pass found Quaresma unmarked in the area.

Portugal full-back Cedric Soares' 88th-minute goal seemed to have given the Iberians a win but their Central American opponents made them pay for switching off at a corner when Mexico defender Hector Moreno rose high to head home a dramatic equaliser.

"It's a dream to be playing with Ronaldo", Silva said ahead of Portugal's Confederation Cup debut against Mexico on Sunday in Kazan.

Along with Portugal and Mexico, Group A includes Russian Federation and New Zealand which played their game on Saturday. New Zealand is at the bottom of the group with no points.

The surgeon on Friday said he was "a lot more confident and optimistic" about Scalise's recovery than he was two days ago. But he will remain in the hospital for "a considerable period of time" and faces additional operations.

Ten minutes from time Portugal saw Quaresma's shot saved whilst at the other end Giovanni dos Santos failed to hit the target.

The overall result will be a positive one for Mexico as they showed a gull to battle back from being down a goal twice to tie that match both times.

"It is a little hard for the players", Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi said. We have to win, because if we win the next game we will be one step away from qualifying. "There are very strong national teams in this tournament", Silva said. "The draw is a fair result without doubt", said Portugal coach Fernando Santos, whose side wore black armbands in honour of the victims of a deadly forest fire back home.

Video replays were again consulted, but no change was made to the initial decision to award the goal.

A regular of Portugal's youth teams, Silva began attracting headlines when he joined Porto's senior squad and played well from the start, finishing the season with 21 goals.

'We also managed to keep Cristiano Ronaldo in check. Guillermo Ochoa had raced off his line to close the angle but Quaresma's cool first-touch took him past the keeper and he promptly put the ball into an empty net.
