U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise's condition has been upgraded to "serious" after he underwent surgery Saturday for injuries sustained in a shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice earlier this week, the hospital treating him said in a release.

Scalise had been at "imminent risk of death" when he was first brought into the hospital on Wednesday, and he received many units of transfused blood, the doctor said.

Scalise, R-Jefferson, was shot in the left hip at a baseball field in Alexandria, Va., as he practiced for the annual congressional baseball game on Wednesday morning.

Scalise was among four people shot by a lone gunman who opened fire on a group of Republican lawmakers practicing baseball at the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park.

Hodgkinson, who had lashed out on social media against Trump and Republicans, was shot and killed by police officers including members of Scalise's security detail who responded.

A motive for the attack is still under investigation, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies said in a statement Friday. His family said in a statement Saturday that Mika had undergone another operation and was expected to recover fully, according to NBC News.
