During the baseball practice on Wednesday, a gunman opened fire, injuring Scalise, congressional staffer Zach Barth, Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika and two members of the Capitol Police force, Crystal Griner and David Bailey. When paramedics arrived on scene, Scalise was awake, Sava said, but by the time he arrived at the hospital he had gone into shock and lost consciousness.
The bullet damaged blood vessels, bones, and internal organs, Sava said.

Scalise is being treated in the hospital's intensive care unit.
Hodgkinson contacted both of his state's Democratic senators frequently, always through email links on their websites, spokesmen said Friday. Yesterday, two more procedures were done: a surgery to fix abdominal damage, and an orthopedic surgery to fix his broken leg. Sava would not be specific about Scalise's internal injuries, saying he was trying to preserve some of the Congressman's privacy. Hodgkinson of IL, died after being shot by Capitol Police officers.
He said that, while the Congressman remains sedated, that has been dialed back a bit to the point where Scalise has been able to respond to his family, and knows they are there with him. Scalise remains in critical condition, but his vital signs reportedly stabilized.

The Democrats won the annual baseball game, 11-2, but said that they wanted the trophy to be displayed in Scalise's office until he returns to work.
Scalise was shot in the hip and taken to the MedStar Washington Hospital Center on Wednesday, where he underwent his first surgery after the attack.
Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center says "an excellent recovery is a good possibility", but says Scalise faces additional surgeries, a long hospital stay and rehabilitation. Scalise has been an avid participant in the game since arriving in Congress in 2008.
