London police said Saturday they believed the death toll at the Grenfell Tower fire had risen to at least 58, as Britain comes to grips with what could be the worst fire in the country since World War II, Reuters reported.

At least 30 people were killed in the fire at Grenfell Tower in the west London neighbourhood of north Kensington.

On the figure of 58, he said: "I really hope it won't, but it may increase", while adding that "it might be that some of those are safe and well", and for some reason, had not yet made themselves known to the police.

Police commander Stuart Cundy said there was nothing to suggest the fire was started deliberately.

Around 70 people are missing, according to Britain's Press Association, and identification of the victims is proving very hard.

Grenfell Tower in west London after a fire engulfed the 24-storey building on Wednesday morning, Saturday, June 17, 2017.

Back in the area around Grenfell Tower, Mirna Suleiman, 26, a family friend of the first named victim, Mohammad Alhajali, claimed she and members of his family were told by the designated casualty line that there was no such list of missing people - even a day and a half after the fire had taken place.

"We need answers and we need answers now", another man said through a megaphone. Some 600 people were living in the tower's 120 apartments.

"It is hard to escape a very sombre national mood", she said in a message marking the event. Hundreds have been left homeless, putting more pressure on officials in a city plagued by a chronic housing shortage.

Protesters also say they're anxious about how and where victims will be rehoused.

On Saturday, NHS England said 19 people were being treated in hospital, including 10 in critical care.

"We want justice!", "Shame on you!", and "Killers!", the protesters shouted as they scuffled with security guards in the lobby of the building.

But she sidestepped questions over whether she had failed to judge the public mood.

The fire at the 24-story building has led to community anger and protests over the British government's response.

May announced on Friday that her government has set up a £5 million ($8.4 million Cdn) "discretionary fund" to help pay for food, clothing, personal supplies and funerals.

The tragedy has provoked a huge response from nearby communities.

Some Grenfell residents had warned months ago fire safety issues at the tower meant that it was at risk of a "catastrophic" event. More than $3.8 million has been raised for the victims. What emerges in the coming weeks and months will be very hard for many people, including politicians and organisations, but we must get to the truth.
