President Donald Trump called for unity in the aftermath of Wednesday's shooting at a GOP baseball practice in Alexandria that has left Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise in a critical condition.
Vice President Mike Pence earlier on Thursday said he visited MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where Scalise was being treated.
The congressman underwent another surgery Saturday, and the hospital says he is more responsive and speaking with family.

Scalise was wounded when a gunman opened fire at a GOP lawmaker baseball practice Wednesday morning.
After additional surgeries and rehabilitation, Scalise can be expected to walk "and hopefully run", Sava said.
Scalise, 51, who represents a district in Louisiana and is the House majority whip, had previously been listed in critical condition.
Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding, Sava said.

Leaders decided the game would go on as scheduled at Nationals Park in Washington, home of the city's professional baseball team, and the Democrats won, 11 to 2.
Bailey is a member of Congressman Steve Scalise's protective detail. The shooter later died from his injuries.
"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time", Trump said Thursday at the start of a White House event on apprenticeship. Investigators are still studying James T. Hodgkinson's social media profile and activities leading up to the attack.
On Friday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation identified the guns found at the scene of the shooting as a 9 mm handgun and a 7.62-caliber rifle.
Hodgkinson has been identified as the suspect in the Wednesday, June. Hodgkinson had arrests in his background but showed required firearms licenses to an IL deputy who confronted him about shooting a cornfield last spring.
