England 'stood up to be counted', says Southgate

Harry Kane reflected on a "sweet" end to his first game as England captain after the Tottenham forward netted an equaliser deep into stoppage time to deny Scotland a famous victory at Hampden Park.

England took the lead in the 70th minute when substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's left-foot strike beat goalkeeper Craig Gordon's flimsy attempt at a save.

Hampden Park had been rocking after Leigh Griffiths scored two free-kicks after the 87th-minute to make it 2-1, but England - and Kane - kept composure with a fine equaliser.

The draw means England's cushion at the top of Group F has been narrowed to two points, but there remains confidence within the group that it is a matter of when rather than if they qualify for the World Cup.

"We stayed calm", Kane said.

To come back from 2-1 down with the whole stadium bouncing and the memories that might have brought for the team, they put that to one side and they came through it.

The top team in each of the nine UEFA qualifying groups will secure a direct berth in next year's World Cup.

"The atmosphere in the changing-room would have been a party if we'd won", he said.

Mayweather, McGregor agree August super fight
UFC president Dana White told ESPN: "We've been in negotiations now for a while and to be honest the negotiation went smooth". White made an appearance on SportsCenter and said that UFC champion McGregor firmly believes that he can defeat Mayweather .

"First and foremost they were definitely great free-kicks, "he said".

Montenegro and Denmark remain locked on points in the battle for second place after respective victories, 4-1 at home to Armenia and 3-1 in Kazakhstan. We know how good this England side are.

Kane revealed he had been given some tips on how to handle the job by previous skipper Wayne Rooney and insisted England's commando training helped give them the steel to salvage a draw against Scotland with just seconds left on the clock.

"It was important to us to keep that unbeaten record going", admitted Kane. We've had lots of discussions as a team about what we can do better.

"I have got to say it was like watching a heavyweight boxer versus a middleweight", Strachan said.

Joe Hart was largely a bystander in the England goal, though, with Griffiths' tame 20-yard effort easily held. To be 2-1 down in stoppage time, to get that goal is special. But one lapse of concentration has cost us in the end and instead of getting three points we got one.

"So to then go again as a team and for no-one to drop their heads, it was a proud moment". "I have had great captains in my career so far and if I can take anything from any of them I will be happy".

All in all, it was a very decent game, but one man in particular received a lot of stick on social media - and that wasn't just because of his £6 ASOS cap.
