The shooter who opened fire on Republican congressmen at baseball field in Virginia had blasted GOP lawmakers and supported taxing the rich for years, according to a review of more than two dozen letters he wrote to his local hometown newspaper.
Officials say James T. Hodgkinson wounded House Rep. Steve Scalise and others Wednesday morning.
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana is one of four people shot this morning in Alexandria.
United States media identified Hodgkinson, who died following a shootout with police in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, as a 66-year-old from Belleville Illinois, a suburb of St. Louis.
The suspect owns a home inspection business, but his inspection license expired in the fall of past year, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.
Robert Becker, who oversaw Sanders' campaign in Iowa and other key states, said none of the campaign field organizers in Iowa or IL could remember a volunteer named James Hodgkinson.
Former Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, who had conversed with Hodgkinson while at the gym, said that he thought he was homeless since he always carried around a bag full of clothes and was often in the same outfit.

Public records that align with the alleged shooter's name and personal details also match the descriptions on Hodgkinson's Facebook profile: his business, location, wife, and wife's employer. He had several other arguments with neighbors including one later in 2006 where police were called after Hodgkinson "accidentally struck" a neighbor's dog "while it was sleeping in the roadway", according to police records.
