Donald Trump and his wife Melania visited top Republican congressman Steve Scalise, recuperating at a hospital after being shot by a rifle-wielding critic of the president who sprayed bullets on U.S. lawmakers practising for an annual baseball game in a Washington suburb.

In a statement, Texas Rep. Roger Williams, one of the team's coaches, said one of his staff members, legislative correspondent Zack Barth, was shot during the incident and is receiving medical attention.

Police identified the gunman as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson, who reportedly had made frequent anti-Trump and anti-Republican posts on social media.

Scalise was among five people wounded when a shooter sprayed rifle fire at congressional Republicans practicing on a diamond in Alexandria.

Representative Steve Scalise, 51, was in critical condition Wednesday after surgery to treat a gunshot wound to the hip.

Other election officials from Kentucky also issued statements following the shooting.

"We would have been able to defend ourselves and come to the aid of the (Capitol) Police, who were extraordinary", added Palmer.

Griner, 32, is also a Capitol Police special agent.

Colleagues who visited Mr Scalise were generally upbeat but spoke more in terms of hope than the confident predictions in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

I think Warren Gatland is pretty good at this. "We felt Owen's had a bit of rugby at the moment", said Gatland. In retaining the backrow trio that went so well against the Crusaders, Gatland has not picked Sam Warburton .

The morning after visiting Scalise in the hospital, Trump said the congressman's challenges are "more difficult" than first thought.

Two Capitol police exchanged gunfire with the lone gunman carrying a rifle, congressmen said. Rabin was seen accompanying the Trumps to the exit when they were leaving.

Two Capitol Police officers sustained relatively minor injuries, as did a congressional aide, and they have been released from hospitals. Scalise and the others had been at the GOP team's baseball practice in nearby Alexandria, Virginia, when they were shot.

When pressed on just where the country should look for inspiration to turn a new chapter after the negative and at times violent rhetoric that's seeped into politics, Palmer says it starts in Washington. "I think we're lucky Scalise was there because this was his security detail and without them, it would have been a massacre".

Thursday evening, regardless of party or dugout, Sherman thinks the congressional baseball game presents the ideal opportunity to change the tenor of the political atmosphere on Capitol Hill.

"I know the entire Senate will join me in echoing the sentiments of the president this morning", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on the Senate floor.

Richmond, the Democrats' star pitcher, had a rare off night previous year on the mound because the congressional baseball game fell the day after he pulled an all-nighter on the House floor to protest GOP inaction on gun laws.

The event raised questions about the security of members of Congress. Scalise and Mika, however, appear to be in need our prayers as they fight for their lives and return to health. It also hit close to home for Arizona lawmakers, many of whom were in office when then-Rep.
