Hodgkinson, the 66-year-old who died in custody after opening fire on Republican lawmakers Wednesday as they practiced for the Congressional Baseball Game - was arrested in 2006 for domestic violence, the Belleville News-Democrat reported.

Hodgkinson was a member of a number of anti-GOP groups on Facebook, including "Terminate the Republican Party".
Hodgkinson, who voted in the Democratic primary in 2016, participated in a protest outside the downtown Belleville post office, according to the Belleville News Democrat.
"I have never said 'life sucks, ' only the policies of the Republicans", he wrote in a letter published in the Belleville (Ill.) News-Democrat in the summer of 2012.
The incident happened March 24, according to sheriff's officials, just days before Hodgkinson presumably left IL for Virginia. Republicans also control both chambers of Congress.
He also wrote frequent letters to his hometown newspaper, the Belleville News-Democrat, which published almost two dozen letters between 2010 and 2012, many of which included complaints about the same theme: income inequality.
ATF and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents could be seen at Hodgkinson's home Wednesday.
Dale Walsh, 65, of Belleville, said he was a lifelong friend of Hodgkinson's.
Hodgkinson was charged in April 2006 with battery and aiding damage to a motor vehicle but the charges were later dismissed, records show. When he went outside, he saw Hodgkinson shooting a rifle into a cornfield. But because he had properly registered himself as a firearms owner with the state of IL, deputies merely advised him to shoot safely.
Three years earlier, Hodgkinson served as an independent contractor on a county weatherization program. He declined to elaborate on the incident.

Hodgkinson had an IL firearm identification card and a concealed carry license in the state, which would have allowed him to legally obtain a weapon in IL, according to a local law enforcement official who requested anonymity.
The ATF is now tracking the history of the weapons used Tuesday. He was a gun owner.
Fox 2 once interviewed James Hodgkinson, along with other protestors at an Occupy St. Louis rally in 2011.
However, Hodgkinson had no hunting permits in Illinois, according to Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
But he appears to have been living out of a white cargo van in Alexandria in the months leading up to the shooting.
Hodgkinson would ask the mayor for restaurant and bar recommendations within walking distance of the facility.
He is believed by investigators to have been a person "of strong views", the US official said, without elaborating. "He didn't fit into our gym at all".
He called Wednesday's attack on that baseball field in Alexandria, Va., the "first (act) of political rhetorical terrorism".
Alison Manson would steer her one-year-old daughter away from him. "He was just as insane then as I thought he was 20 years ago".
Alison's husband, George, said he sometimes tried to say hello to Hodgkinson. "He had a lot of bags with him". He would not respond.
