APN Statement Marking 50 Years of Israel Occupation

Israel claims the stipends encourage terrorism, while Palestinians say they are welfare payments. Israeli control of East Jerusalem is rejected under global law, with United Nations Security Council Resolution 478 condemning the "annexation" as illegal in 1980.

Monday marks 50 years of the start of the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, which resulted in Israel's occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza and the Syrian Golan.

The resolution called for a two-state solution to the conflict between Israel and its Palestinian neighbors and declared that "Israelis deserve security, recognition, and a normal life free from terror and incitement".

The military conflict began when Israel on June 5 launched a sudden pre-emptive airstrike that destroyed nearly all of the Egyptian air force on the ground.

But now, half a century after the Six Day War in which Israel defeated its Arab neighbours, the former paratrooper is overcome with uncertainty about the prospects of peace with the Palestinians.

According to the report, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been imprisoned by Israel since 1967.

The sun was shining, there was barely a trace of cloud in the bright blue sky and the temperature was about 30 degrees Celsius. From there it was all over for Wawrinka , who dropped serve to begin the third and was also broken two more times after that.

"The occupation has been continuing for fifty years now, and this is a very bad thing".

Shadid said those affected had been released in 2011 when Hamas traded an Israeli soldier for more than 1,000 prisoners held by Israel.

In a statement - before Netanyahu's speech - marking yesterday's anniversary Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas's office reiterated his call for a Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital.

The negotiations have stumbled and stopped. Indeed, today, as the long-simmering tensions between Gulf Arab states boiled over and with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and others severing ties with Qatar, Israeli Minister of Defense Avigdor Lieberman remarked that this was an opportunity and that "Israel is more than open to cooperation". Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday pledged that he would not cede military control of the West Bank's Jordan valley in any future peace agreement with the Palestinians. This figure has dropped from 60% between 2014-16.

"Israel is stubborn and just wants to take the land and the West Bank and kick all the Palestinians out".

The economic gulf between Israelis and Palestinians is striking. These differentials add a compelling socio-economic factor to the urgent need for a political solution based on two-states for two peoples.
