75th anniversary of Battle of Midway marked in San Diego

The battle has been called the "most decisive blow in the history of naval warfare".

The speaker was former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, the memorial's national chairman, and a decorated and wounded World War II combat veteran.

Cmdr. Greg Brotherton, executive officer of Naval Air Station Key West, said the legacy of the battle lives on both in the half-century of service of the aircraft carrier that was named for Midway, and in the importance of the Navy and naval aviation.

On June 4, 1942, Americans delivered a devastating blow to the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Months of codebreaking and intelligence gathered by U.S. Naval decrypt units allowed the Commander of the United States Pacific Fleet, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz to intercept enemy messages, convey misinformation that Midway was vulnerable, and prepare a counter attack against the coming assault on Midway. "We were able to inflict significant damage to a number of Japanese vessels during the Midway battle".

A special ceremony was held Monday to commemorate 75 years since the Battle of Midway. The Japanese casualties numbered 3,000.
