Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, the Maldives, and Egypt snapped their diplomatic ties with Qatar over accusations that the Qatari government sponsors extremist groups, including the Taliban.

The crisis surrounding Qatar is damaging for the Islamic world, and Turkey is working to help resolve the issue through diplomacy, Turkish President Erdogan's spokesman said. "Amid all this, tensions further escalating in the region through such a crisis would mean wasting of the region's resources and opportunities". "For this goal, the prime minister will undertake visits to Kuwait, Qatar and Turkey", it said.

Saudi Arabia has been leading an effort to isolate Qatar, accusing the energy-rich Gulf state, and the Qatari-backed channel, of supporting violent Islamic groups across the Middle East.

"Instead of backtracking on previous Saudi threats to Qatar, [Jubeir] tried to clarify that Qatar is not under blockade and Riyadh was only exercising its sovereign rights with the measures it took", he said.

It is not known how many troops will be deployed, or exactly when. But it was not immediately clear if they arrived. That's led to much disruption to trade, particularly in food.

Later, the authorities of Libya, Yemen, as well as the Maldives and Mauritius also announced about severing diplomatic relations with Qatar.

"We will spend the night in Qatar with meetings and a working program".

In Geneva, the United Nations human rights chief said Wednesday he is "alarmed about the possible impact" of a diplomatic rift in the Persian Gulf on people's lives.

"The First vessel on that service is to arrive Friday and will run once a week", he added.

The effects of the dispute could widen beyond the region.

Progress has been made towards resolving the crisis between Qatar and its Gulf neighbours after senior U.S. officials met leading players in the standoff, the State Department said Tuesday.

"We favor dialogue and negotiations and reject the oppression and sanctions that prevent Qatar from setting a foreign policy in accordance with our independence, sovereignty and national interests", he said.

"We are receiving reports that specific individuals have already been summarily instructed to leave the country they are residing in, or have been ordered to return home by their own government", he said.
