We have had a political crisis in Northern Ireland since the collapse of the executive past year over a heating scandal implicating Arlene Foster, the leader of the DUP.
There are fears the central role being offered to the DUP could call into question the "rigorous impartiality" expected from Mrs May's administration under the Good Friday Agreement in the event of political disputes in the North.
Northern Ireland has been without a powersharing executive since March and without a first and deputy first minister since January.
The former prime minister, who began work engaging with the IRA to end the Northern Ireland conflict, said the peace process was still "fragile" and cautioned the pact could mean the Government will no longer be seen as impartial. So far, they have not succeeded but when the dust has settled after the election they will have to try again.
"There is definitely more support for equal marriage than there is opposition and it's growing all the time, so we want the politicians to recognise it. Society is moving faster than they are - they need to get with the programme".
