Tennis star Andy Murray beat Juan Martin Del Potro in the French Open Saturday, bringing an 84-minute set to a close and sending the Scottish athlete to the fourth round of the French Open, which enters its second week Sunday.

Anderson twice recovered from a set down to advance 6-7 (6), 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in just under four hours in a duel between two players born in Johannesburg.

Awaiting in the next round for Murray, who lost in the final to Novak Djokovic of Serbia at last year's French Open, will be American John Isner or Russia's Karen Khachanov.

Britain's Kyle Edmund was knocked out by South African Kevin Anderson and women's third seed Simona Halep had to dig deep to get past spirited young Russian Daria Kasatkina 6-0 7-5.

"I played some good matches at the beginning of the year, but definitely in the clay-court season, the second or third sets were the best I have played, for sure", he said.

Murray and Del Potro will get underway at around 12pm. Again, when he was doing drop shots and slices, it's different.

While Murray won that affair too - and their only previous meeting at a major - del Potro had triumphed in their most recent clash, so the Scot had been alert to the dangers.

The Mexcian wingers targeted Beasley and Yedlin, but could not complete enough take-ons or deliver enough risky balls. He was a simple distributor in possession and played a textbook performance for a central defensive mid.

Murray, the 2016 runner-up, reached the third round with a bruising 6-7 (3/7), 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) win over Martin Klizan of Slovakia.

"Whoever won that first set had big momentum", said Murray, who beat Del Potro in the Olympic gold-medal match at last year's Rio Games.

"Whoever won that first set had big momentum, it was like an hour and 30 minutes, and in these conditions, when it's very slow and heavy, to be coming back is hard".

"I have never played a match against him, but I practised with him before he got on to the tour when he was like 350 (in the rankings), and he was really good". Both of us hand some chances in the first set, the second set was the same. When we got to the Davis Cup, I'd played the Olympics, gone to Cincinnati and then NY.

The match hinged on a first set that was so tight that in the end it took a split decision from two of the officials before it could finally be given to Murray.

Cilic is yet to surrender a set at Roland Garros this year and has failed to lose more than three games in any set played, which serves as an indication as to the kind of form he's enjoying as he seeks glory in Paris.

"But, you know, quality by him".

"He is, in my opinion, one of the best players in the world when he is fit and healthy", top seed Murray, who has had a disappointing season, said of the 2009 US Open champion.
