Mrs Merkel, who is meeting with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto to discuss trade, told reporters gathered in Mexico City on Friday: "I assume that Britain, from what I heard from the prime minister today, wants to stick to its negotiating plan".

Donald Tusk, president of the European Council of national leaders, was even more explicit, saying that while "We don't know when Brexit talks start".

A hung parliament, though viewed as less likely, would have an even greater impact on the talks, nearly certainly delaying their start while a coalition government was formed in London and set about redefining the UK's Brexit negotiating positions.

Now with the anniversary of Britain's landmark June 23 Brexit vote looming and still no serious negotiations underway, many European Union nations and top officials have had enough.

"Her wish and will was not really too much accepted by the British people", he said. "We want to do it quickly, respecting the calendar", she said in comments reported by Sky News. For Chancellor Merkel the ineivitibale Brexit questions cropped up again following Theresa May's woeful electoral showing with the divorce talks due to get underway on June 19th.

Brussels' chief negotiator Michel Barnier has said the talks would begin when Britain was ready, suggesting he would consider a short delay. Do your best to avoid a "no deal" as result of "no negotiations".

What can not easily be delayed, however, is the date of Britain's departure from the European Union, which is due to take place exactly two years after the triggering of the Article 50 Brexit process on March 29 2019, whether or not a withdrawal deal has been reached.

"We want to have a fair deal with Britain and we want to have a fair final Brexit negotiations".
