The noncommittal response leaves the door open to White House tapes, something that legal experts say would fall within the purview of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's 2016 election meddling and the Trump campaign's potential role.
Trump told reporters during a joint press conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis that he never asked Comey for a loyalty pledge or urged him to scuttle an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Trump continued to be coy about the possibility of there being recordings of his conversations with Comey, which he has suggested previously.
On Friday, the leaders of the House of Representatives intelligence committee's investigation said they had asked Comey for his notes and memos about his discussions with Trump, and asked the White House to produce any recordings or memos of conversations between Trump and Comey.

While Trump maintained he did not ask Comey to let the FBI's investigation into Flynn go, he told reporters "there'd be nothing wrong if I did say it".
"...and WOW, Comey is a leaker!"
A day later, Trump accused Comey of lying under oath, saying, "frankly, James Comey confirmed a lot of what I said, and some of the things that he said just weren't true".
He also seized on Comey's revelation that he had directed a friend to release contents of memos he'd written documenting his conversations with the president to a reporter. It was a stunning accusation, suggesting that the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director had lied to Congress, while under oath.
Trump's private attorney, Marc Kasowitz, seized on Comey's admission that he had orchestrated the public release of the information.
