China calls for solidarity, cooperation as SCO admits new members

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his speech at the summit, reaffirmed India's keenness to enhance connectivity with the SCO nations, but stressed that connectivity initiatives must respect sovereignty of the nations and regional integrity, and must be based on the principle of inclusivity.

The "all weather friendship" between China and Pakistan suffered a setback on Friday as Chinese president Xi Jinping decided not to meet Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Astana.

Mr. Modi also held an important bilateral meeting with President Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistanand condemned the recent spate of bombings in the Afghan capital Kabul.

However, Chinese Foreign Minister spokesperson Hua Chunying has stated that the murders were not connected to the $50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which is facing opposition by Baloch nationalists.

The Indian side is grateful for China's support for India's accession to the SCO and will work closely with China in the organisation, Mr Modi said.

President Jinping said China and India, as the two largest developing countries in the world, should focus more on cooperation, advance side by side, lend support to each other's development, uphold world peace and promote common development.

India has been an observer of the SCO meeting since 2005.

"This is Xi's first foreign visit after he presided over the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation and also a major diplomatic activity of China in the Eurasia region", Wang was quoted as saying by the official Xinhua news agency.

He said Russian-Pakistani relations have been constructive and mutually beneficial.
