It was a humiliating day for Liverpool yesterday (June 8) as they publicly had to issue an apology to fellow EPL club Southampton over "any misunderstanding" regarding the transfer of club captain Virgil van Dijk and the Reds also stated that their interest in the Dutchman has come to an end.
But Saints cried foul, and Press Association Sport understands they asked the Premier League on Tuesday to investigate an alleged illegal approach.
Everton supporters were quick to have their say on the news via social media, with many understandably delighted and others taking the time to laugh at their arch-rivals.
Liverpool are still available at 10/3 (4.33) to land their man, but that would be quite a serious of U-turns given the very public way in which they announced they were no longer interested.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction...
British police name third London attacker as Youssef Zaghba
Counter-terror police arrested the pair during an operation on a street in Ilford, east London , Scotland Yard said. Eight were killed in the terror attack on the bridge and Borough Market and dozens more seriously injured.
Van Dijk is one of the highly rated defenders now playing in the Premier League and Liverpool are seeking to make improvements to their rearguard ahead of a return to the Champions League next season. Previously Van Dijk's image showed him in a Saints kit whereas now the picture is of him on global duty. In that instance, they were fined £100,000 and banned from signing academy players for at least a year.
This withdrawal was communicated after Southampton FC threatened to file an official complaint the Premier League accusing Liverpool of illegally approaching the defender.
Scottish Premiership champions Celtic will reportedly receive a bumper windfall should Virgil Van Dijk leave Southampton this summer.
"Liverpool Football Club would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton Football Club and player transfers between the two clubs", read the statement.
The claim that we have ended our interest in the player is, in our opinion, a statement that actually means the Reds have ended their interest in the inflated transfer fee that Southampton were demanding following the bust-up.
