He said he was about to run to the man on fire - 28-year-old Miguel Feliz - but then saw the police.
An innocent man was beaten by cops after a police chase and shooting that ended in a fiery crash in Jersey City Sunday night, prosecutors say.
While the prosecutor's office has not identified the individuals seen in the new video assaulting the man, Jersey City mayor Steven Fulop said on Twitter they were officers. Cops pursued him down Tonnelle Avenue, and Pinkston got into a minor crash when he tried to move between two lanes of traffic.
Erik Roberto was in his vehicle boxed in by arriving police near Tonnelle Avenue when he saw a auto in flames and a man on the ground.
The man on fire was not the suspect pursued by officers, but a bystander ― though it's not clear the officers in the video were aware of that at the time as they approached him with guns drawn. A Jersey City spokesperson said, "Once we clearly identify all the officers involved we will be seeking termination in addition to any possible criminal penalties in appropriate cases".
Hudson County Prosecutor Edith Suarez said the video will be added to the evidence being used to investigate the incident. One of the officers is seen kicking the man in the head as officers handcuffed the man. He captured video of the encounter.
"They didn't help him, they just started kicking him and grabbing him", Roberto said.
Trump accuses London Mayor Khan of "pathetic excuse" over attack statement
A spokesman said the mayor is focused on "working with the police, the emergency services and the government to keep London safe". He called the president "truly beneath contempt" and "just a troll" - and called on May to " tell Trump where to get off".
A mile beyond the first collision, six miles from the start point of the chase, according to the Jersey Journal, Pinkston got into a more serious crash, hitting a utility pole, his vehicle erupting in flames.
"Taking swift action isn't always elegant, but this video clearly shows that the officers acted quickly to extinguish the flames, and pull this man out of harm's way", Disbrow said in a statement.
The bystander's family told NBC4 that the man suffered severe burns and fractured ribs and is scheduled for surgery today.
Pinkston, 48, has been charged with eluding and aggravated assault over the pursuit that began near Ocean and Cator avenues, NJ.com reported. "He was just leaving home for work", the victim's father, Tomas Felix, said.
City officials said Wednesday that they have major concerns regarding how police conducted themselves during the pursuit in the Greenville section of New Jersey that ended with an innocent man fighting for his life.
"I don't think there's any explanation that would justify their actions", he told NBC4.
City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said the city was "concerned" about the several-mile-long pursuit, which involved a total of two crashes and also police firing shots at the suspect.
