Suicide bombers and gunmen attacked Iran's parliament and the Mausoleum of Khomeini, killing at least 12 people in a twin assault.

(CNN) - Iran has slammed US President Donald Trump's response to Wednesday's twin terror attacks in Tehran as "repugnant", as the death toll from the ISIS-claimed assaults rose to 16.

According to reports, Reza Seifollhai, the deputy head of Iran's National Security Council, said on state television that the assailants were Iranian Isis recruits.

After the terrorist ring was discovered and Abu Ayeshe and other leaders were shot down, those now dead escaped from Iran and were lost until yesterday, when they attacked the legislative headquarters and the tomb of the founder of the Islamic Revolution. And apparently, there was also a third cell, which, depending on the timeline that you believe, was either arrested prior to these two attacks or otherwise had been - just within the same kind of timeframe had been arrested.

The Islamic State, via its Amaq News Agency, claimed responsibility for the attacks, NPR's Alison Meuse reports. Kurdish groups have carried out small scale attacks against Iranian security forces in the north-west of the country.

It added that the group returned to Iran previous year trying to commit acts of terrorism in the holy cities of the country but they failed to do so since the security forces inflicted damage on their network while killing the ringleader named as Abu Aisha.

The attacks drew condemnation from Iran's allies - and also from the United States.

The attackers raided Iran's parliament and Ayatollah Khomeini's mausoleum on Wednesday morning, in a rare strike at the heart of the Islamic Republic.

Iran may also decide to undergo a build-up of the borders and increased emphasis on the country's already prominent defense and intelligence services.

State TV said one of the attackers was killed by security guards and that a woman was arrested following the shrine attack.

Information known after the attacks referred that one of its authors was a woman who had immolated outside the sanctuary of the magnet Khomeini, but later investigations discarded that version and indicated that they were men dressed in women's clothes. "The depravity of terrorism has no place in a peaceful, civilized world".

Messages of support were sent by Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Syrian foreign ministry.

The ministry also published pictures of their corpses. The Islamic State group claimed the attacks.

There are concerns that a doubling down on security could lead to a wider clampdown on the opposition in Iran. Already, tensions are high following a cut in ties this week between four Arab countries and Qatar over accusations it supports terrorist groups and is aligning itself too closely with Iran. It said a security guard was killed and that one of the attackers was killed by security guards.
