Ed Woodward hails Manchester United's 'tremendous progress' under Jose Mourinho

United know they can not break into the top four on the strength of their final two Premier League games against Southampton and Crystal Palace, as they trail Liverpool by eight points with only six left up for grabs.

Victory over Ajax Amsterdam in the final on May 24 would be rewarded with a place in next season's Champions League, Europe's most lucrative club competition.

"If we win the trophy, David wins the trophy because he played three matches against Feyenoord and against Fenerbahce".

Mourinho was in a defiant mood after the match, insisting that he has no option than to rest his best players in the Premier League due to their European commitments, and he went as far as to claim that the game against Spurs and this week's encounter with Southampton and Crystal Palace were "matches we don't want to play".

"In my eyes it was not the right decision, but in life sometimes you have this kind of situation where you're sometimes not correct and not right in your way, but you have to accept it, and I accepted it".

Mourinho said his hands will continue to be tied with respect to team selection for United's last two games of the Premier League, against Southampton and Crystal Palace, as they were against Manchester City, Swansea, Arsenal and Tottenham. "At Manchester United, for us it's more important to win titles than to finish in the top four". I can not put four or five other kids all together in the fire; I can not do that to the kids. For example, Ander Herrera, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Paul Pogba, and Marcus Rashford can all play against us because they were rested for the last game.

"We're approaching the end of a compelling season - our first with Jose Mourinho as manager and one which I believe we've made tremendous progress, both on and off the pitch", he said.

Marouane Fellaini will return from a three-match domestic ban against Southampton but Mourinho admits that other players will have to "sacrifice" themselves to give their teammates a rest. However, as I said after the game, I think they should be very proud of what they did.

United captain Rooney agreed with Mourinho in that Tottenham had more motivation going into the game.

Mourinho added: "I can not go to Man City or Arsenal and put out five kids at the same time altogether". The two goals conceded were bad.

"And I repeat the same - thank you Michael Oliver, because we were out in the FA Cup".

"(Daley) Blind played today after 90 minutes on Thursday. Real Madrid, however, have yet to decide whether they want to do without the former Monaco star next season and negotiations between the two clubs should begin soon.
