Investigators determined she died at the Elwood Road home. The deceased woman's husband, David Webb, stated "he didn't know what happened". The severed head in his hand was hers, police said. It was not clear if he had been assigned an attorney.

Sandy Police told the station that Wagner was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

The weird sequence began Sunday afternoon - Mother's Day - in Colton, a once-significant logging down about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southeast of Portland. At some point on Sunday afternoon, he killed his mother, police said, without providing further details.

Joshua Webb's father said that his son "seemed normal".

David Webb said his 36-year-old son, Joshua Lee Webb, had vision problems and received Social Security payments but never showed any signs that he might be capable of the crime.

He told the Associated Press: "I never foresaw a problem".

Mystery over Earth's light flashes may be solved
The flashes show up in three distinct colors because the camera takes the red, green and blue images several minutes apart. Detecting glints like this from much farther away could be used by other spacecraft to study exoplanets, Marshak said.

Breaking down, the father added, "I don't know. I waited all my life to retire with my wife, and now I can't", he said. "That's all I know". The head of Tina Webb, the suspect's mother, was recovered at the Thriftway grocery store.

The gruesome chain of events unfolded in two tiny, rural towns once known for logging about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Portland and sent shock waves through Estacada, where most people knew the white-haired checkout clerk identified as 66-year-old Michael Wagner for his warmth and quick sense of humor.

He allegedly began stabbing a store employee there.

Ernie Roberts, interim police chief in nearby Sandy, who provide police services for Estacada, said the suspect was in a "catatonic state" during his arrest and did not reveal any possible motive during interviews. He was evaluated at a hospital and then taken to Clackamas County Jail. He underwent surgery at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland on Monday, the Oregonian reported.

"This is such a insane random thing that has happened and I am truly at a loss why someone would do what this person did", she said.
