When he fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, US President Donald Trump got immediate Democratic pushback.
Thomas O'Connor, the president of the FBI Agents Association, called Comey's firing "a gut punch".
"He's a showboat. He's a grandstander".
In an interview with NBC News, Trump also said he'd asked Comey point-blank if he was under investigation and was assured three times he was not.
He continued: "I'm not going to spend time on the decision or the way it was executed". Some press reports had suggested that Comey had asked for more resources for the investigation before he was sacked, but McCabe said he wasn't aware of that and it didn't fit with what he knew about how those requests were made.
Karl also asked Sanders on the decision-making process that went into the Comey termination.
"I want to find out if there was a problem in the election having to do with Russia", Trump said, adding, "If Russia did anything, I want to know that".

In his first interview since firing Comey on Tuesday, Trump appeared to try to underscore that Comey's dismissal was about his performance at the Federal Bureau of Investigation and not about the Russian Federation probe. Rosenstein concluded his assessment saying, "The FBI is unlikely to regain public and congressional trust until it has a Director who understands the gravity of the mistakes and pledges never to repeat them. I have the highest respect for his considerable abilities and his integrity", McCabe told members of the Senate intelligence committee. "And it has been the greatest privilege and honour of my professional life to work with him". Some have said Comey expressed major concerns about Trump, reportedly telling friends the president is "crazy".
Asked again late last month in a CBS News interview whether he believes Russian Federation tried to interfere in the election, Trump said "I don't know".
The Acting FBI Director also said that there has been no effort to impede Russian Federation investigation - which was the driving insinuation of virtually all coverage yesterday.
Trump is considering 11 people to replace Comey, a White House official said.
President Donald Trump said Thursday that he had already made a decision to fire ousted FBI Director James Comey before Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein wrote up a formal recommendation to do so. "It is my opinion and belief that the FBI will continue to pursue this investigation vigorously and completely", he testified. In that testimony, Comey said he was "mildly nauseous" to think that he may have swung the election after coming forward days before the election to say that he was reopening the Clinton email investigation.
Rosenstein's three-page letter faulted Comey for his handling of an investigation previous year into Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's email practices as secretary of state. "And at that time he told me, you are not under investigation, which I knew anyway". After the Comey news broke on Tuesday night, Spicer asked Trump if it was still alright for him to do his reserve duty and Trump gave him the OK.
The White House has said Comey was sacked after the president sought and received a memorandum from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein laying out his concerns about how Comey handled the Clinton investigation. However, White House officials told CNN that Tuesday's handling of the Comey news was "an embarrassment" and "a disaster".
