Israeli police shoot dead Palestinian knifeman after attack

An Israeli police officer in his late 30s was moderately wounded Saturday afternoon in a stabbing attack in Jerusalem's Old City near Lions' Gate, according to Israeli paramedics.

According to Israeli police spokesperson, Israeli occupation forces had "neutralized" the attacker and "immediately pronounced him dead on the spot".

The abducted man, identified as Omran Rajabi, works as a guard of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and was taken prisoner after the fatal shooting, when he started filming soldiers who were attacking a Palestinian woman, trying to enter the mosque.

In that terror attack, Jamil Tamimi allegedly stabbed to death 21-year-old Hannah Bladon, who was in Israel as part of a study overseas program at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Eye witnesses added that another officer shot the Jordanian man in the head while he was lying on the ground.

The attacker, brandishing a knife, stabbed the policeman in one of the alleys of the Old City before the wounded officer shot him dead, the statement said.

The Israeli police officer reportedly stabbed received moderate injuries.

Israel says the violence is fueled by a Palestinian campaign of incitement.

Thirty-seven Israelis, two American tourists and a British student have been killed in Palestinian street attacks which have slowed in recent months, though not stopped.

Others were shot dead during protests or clashes, while some were killed in Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip.
